79 CHAPTER VII. Port Adelaide — The Sixteen Mile Creek — Mangroves — Native guides — Yorke’s Peninsula — Extinct Volcanoes — Natives of the Peninsula. Having chartered a small schooner, in company with Mr. Cock and two other gentlemen, I determined, before leaving South Australia, to visit Yorke’s Peninsula, and, if possible, the harbour of Port Lincoln. Taking our departure from Adelaide, in a vehicle of the cart or light dray species, we crossed the Torrens, and traversed the barren plain over which it is proposed to carry a railroad to the Sixteen Mile Creek, at Port Ade laide. This township has subsequently been abandoned for a locality nearer to the sea, where Governor Gawler has judiciously erected a quay, enabling vessels to dis charge their cargoes with ease and dispatch into com modious stores. The result of this improvement will be visible in the circumstance, that henceforth it will no longer be necessary to leave valuable merchandise on the ground, wholly unprotected from the elements, and from the rapacity of plunderers. To this outport, therefore, the name of “ Port Misery’’ will no longer be applicable. A line of buoys and a light vessel now mark the entrance
