series ok large, perfectly Kat-Koored valises, l^ing at an elevation ok krorn twelve hundred to sixteen hundred metres. Khess valleys, beginning with Rig Neadows in the north, and continuing through American, Indian, Oenesee, and R.sd Olovsr Valleys to Lisrra Valley in ths south, are okten ok considerable si^e (tire larger krorn twelve to Kktesn lrilometrss wide and krorn twenty to twenty-live lcilometres long), and combine a level, easilT- traversable country, such as that ok the Lacra- rnsnto Valley, with a high rnonntain environrnent and climate. Ilie valleys ok Nons^ Rabe and its tributaries, 1^/ing to ths east and northeast ok tire region )ust described, present a sharp contrast again to an^ ok tlis preceding sections. NIs hsre corns to tlis topical sagedrnsli and allcali plains, and barren, trsslsss ridges characteristic ok tlis Orsat Rasin area, ^.rid, with cold winters and hot summers, and with but a meagre supply ok game, this last section is distinctly ths least kavoradle and dssirahle ok the whole area which the Naidn occupied. Divisions.—Dinguisticall^ and also culturally ths Naidu are divided into three groups or divisions, in part coincid ing with the topographic areas )ust outlined. Fliess three sections ok ths Naidu ma^ ds called ths Northeastern, ths hlorthwsstern, and ths Louthsrn. Khe 6rst ok these occupies exclusively the chain ok high mountain-valleys already dsscrihed, and also the arid region to the east and northeast. Resides the main valleys men tioned, this section ok the Naidu occupied Lutt and Humbug Valleys )ust west ok Rig Neadows, and also held Nohawlc Valley as a hunting-ground, ths snowkail being too beavv there kor a permanent residence, Khe western limit ok this section was about three to ten miles east ok the present line between Rutte and Rlumas Oounties. It seems that on the whole the^ had comparatively little close association with the northwestern Naidu, to whom thsv were bnown col lectively as No^toma ("Northern or Rastsrn people"), and came in contact with them onl^ on summer hunts, when the two divisions okten met, and sometimes kought.
