These three verses frotn Psalm 80 were tradi- tionally chanted during the ceremony of gelilah, the rolling and dressing of the Torah scroll. Rossi’s setting is rooted in the Stile antico style, with its old fashioned imitative polyphony and elaborate ornamentation. The kaddish is a doxology inserted between sections of the liturgical Service. Rossi’s joyous setting for flve voices is in the style of the popu lär balletto dance of the time.
