Samuel Naumbourg (1817- 1880) Hovou l'Adonoi Samuel Naumbourg was perhaps the most important of the Reformist composers in nineteenth-century France, responsible for composing many new works for synagogue use. He also encouraged composers such as Halvy to write music for the synagogue, and was the first person to issue the works of Salamone Rossi in a new edition. Jacques Fromental Halevy (1799 - 1862) Min Hameitzar (Psalm 118) Jacques-Fromental Halevy, best known for his opera LaJuive, composed Psalm 118 atthe request of Naumbourg, following the example of Salomon Sulzer in Vienna, who obtained a Psalm 92 in Hebrew from Schubert. Naumbourg encouraged famous Parisian Jewish composers of his time (Halevy, Alkan...) to write liturgical pieces, which were then published in Chants Religieux et Populaires des Israelites. LEIPZIGER SYNAGOGALCHOR Johann Stephan Rittangel (1606 - 1652) Ki Io na'eh (arr.Ludwig Böhme) Rittangel, a born Jew, was not a composer, but a professor of oriental languages and a translator. Born near Bamberg, he travelled around Europe and visited London in 1641. The baroque song "Ki Io na'eh", that shows in each verse two characteristics of God, is originally (typical for this time) for voice and basso continuo. Our arrangement keeps the baroque harmonic shape and transfers it into a vocal dress - from pure solo voice up to a polyphonic six-part setting. Heinrich Schalit (1886 - 1976) Ma tovu This piece is the first in Heinrich Schalit's "Sabbath Eve Liturgy", published in Denver in 1951. Schalit describes in his preface his divine purpose: to "glorify God...with new and exalted songs, ...inspired by Israel's own musical accents, ...re-born through the Creative mind...of Jewish composers of our age." His intention to create a new sound for the Sabbath Eve Liturgy can be heard clearly in this "Ma tovu". Samuel Lampel (1884 - 1942) Tauw l'haudaus (Psalm 92) Lampel was cantor at Leipzig's Synagogue. In 1928 he published his main work "Synagogen-Gesänge".
