After a successful five-year tenure as Music Di rector and Chief Conductor of the Luzerner Sinfonie Orchester und Theater, John Axelrod became Music Director of the Orchestre Na tional des Pays de la Loire (ONPL) starting from the 2010-11 season. His opera activity includes the premiere per- formances of Bernstein’s Candide at Paris’ Theä tre du Chätelet and Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde for Angers Nantes Opera, and the new production of Krenek’s Ke hraus um St. Stephan at the Bregenzer Festspiele. In past seasons at the Luzerner Theater, he con- ducted new productions of Kaiser von Atlantis, Rigoletto, Rake's Progress, II barbiere di Siviglia, Eugene Onegin, Die Dreigroschenoper, Idomeneo, Falstaff and Don Giovanni, most of them per- formed for the Lucerne Festival. Strongly committed to the promotion of the Contemporary repertoire, Mr. Axelrod has premiered many new compositions, including works by Kaija Saariaho, Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, Marco Stroppa, Michael Gordon, Avner Dorman, Marc-Andre Dalbavie, Pascal Dusapin and Wojciech Kilar.
