Symphony No. 8 in b minor, D. 759 'Unfinished' Franz Schubert wrote a countless number of operas, Masses, choral music, orchestral music, chamber music, solo instrumental music that are easily over 600 pieces. Schubert who was born 27 years later than Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) admired Beethoven for his lifetime, but sadly he only lived one more year than Beethoven. Schubert was a prolific composer of Lieder, which is a combination of beautiful lyrics and music, and surely, he brought the Lieders to the highest Standard that songs could have reached. Moreover, because of Schuberts uncrushable passion for music, we can come across with many outstanding symphonies as well. In his early symphonies, the in- fluence of the First Viennese School (Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven) is deeply ingrained, but later symphonies tend to show more faces of the Romanticism. Among the symphonies, 'Unfinished' in b minor and 'The Great (Die Grosse)' in C Major are renowned as the most outstanding and populär symphonies of Schubert. With these two symphonies alone, we could proudly enough say Schu bert added a new page of music history. Unfortunately, Schubert passed away before hearing the symphonies live. In 1822, Schubert thought of composing a four-movement symphony in gloomy b minor, but he could only write two movements. Its third movement ‘Scherzo’ is left with a single page of the full orchestral score and half of the trio section written in piano Sketches. When Schubert was given an honorary diploma from the Graz Music Society (Musikverein für Steiermark), he sent first two movements to Anselm Hüttenbrenner who is a friend of him and a leading member of the Society as a token of appreciation, but the music was simply forgotten afterwards. The Unfinished Sympho ny had been buried in a drawer since then. It was finally found in 1865 by Johann von Herbeck 42
