Born in Brieg, Silesia, in 1927, Mr. Masur studied piano, composition, and conducting at the Music College of Leipzig. He accepted his first major orchestral appointment in 1955, as Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonie. From 1960 to 1964 he was Senior Director of Music at Berlin’s Komische Oper, collaborating with influential director Walter Felsenstein. In 1967 he wasappointed the Dresden Philharmonic's ChiefConductor, a post he held until 1972. In his capacity as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Kapellmeister, he led nearly a thousand performances between 1970 and 1996 and more than 900 concerts on tour. A professor at the Leipzig Academy of Music since 1975, he has received numerous ho- nors: among other, in 1995, he received the Cross of the Order of Merits of the Federal Republic of Germany; in 1997 he received the titles of Commander of the Legion of Honor from the French government and New York City Cultural Ambassadorfrom the City of New York; in April 1999 he received the Commander Cross of Merit of the Polish Republic and in March 2002, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Johannes Rau, bestowed upon Mr. Masur the Cross with Star of the Order of Merits of the Federal Republic of Ger many and in September 2007, the President of Germany, Horst Köhler, bestowed upon him the Great Cross of the Legion of Honor with Star and Ribbon. In September 2008 Maestro Masur received the Furtwängler Prize in Bonn, Germany. Maestro Masur is also an Honorary Citizen of his hometown Brieg. In 2008, Maestro Masur celebrated 60 years of career as a Professional conductor. Kurt Masur's first appearance at the Prague Spring took place on May 23, 1960, when he conducted the Prague Symphony Orchestra. This was followed by further visits, at the heim of the Slovak Philharmonie Orchestra (1963), the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig (1970,1977,1981,1991), again the Prague Symphony Orchestra (1979), and most recently, in 2003, the Orchestre National de France. Orchestr vznikl v roce 1870 a svüj prvni koncert provedl 29. listopadu tehoz roku v dräzdänskem säle zvanem Gewerbehaussaal, pod nä- zvem Gewerbehausorchester. Svüj dnesni näzev prijal orchestr v roce 1915.
