DRESDEH PHiLHARfflOniC Celebrated for its music, architecture and art, Dresden is known affectionately as “Florence on the River Elbe.” At the musical heart of the city is the legendary Dresden Philharmonie, captivating audiences since 1870. Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Richard Strauss, are just a few of the giants of classical music who have led the orchestra along with Bruno Walter, Fritz Busch, Arthur Nikisch, Hermann Sherchen, Erich Kleiber, Willem Mengelberg and Kurt Masur. The orchestra’s international tours in Europe, China, Japan, Israel, South America and the USA, together with their award-winning recordings, have added luster to Dresden Philharmonic’s worldwide acclaim and populär appeal. Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, a legendary Spanish maestro of German descent and principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonie, conducts regularly throughout Germany, Italy, Spain and Japan. He currently conducts the Boston Symphony annually in both its Boston and Tanglewood seasons and appears regularly in New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Montreal including Lincoln Center’s Brahms Festival in the fall of 2004. Violinist Julia Fischer has achieved critical acclaim for her expressive artistry and a grace and poise that belie her age. She has appeared with New York Philharmonie, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and made her Carnegie Hall debut with Lorin Maazel and the Bayerische Rundfunk. Ms. Fischer’s 2003-04 season includes debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, and tours with the Academy of St. Martin in the Field, the English Chamber and the Dresden Philharmonie.
