SSpDW, mmm HENRIK WILLY OLSEN, Director Itetott pjiUtarmmtir ©rrltnstra Henrik Willy Olsen was born in Denmark in 1867 and received his musical education in the High School of Music, Germany. While quite a young man, during the years 1887-1890, he made successful concert tours as violin virtuoso through Scandinavia, Finland, Russia and Switzerland. After this he accepted an engage- ment in Zürich as First Concert Master and in 1900 he went in this capacity to Dresden in the Philharmonie and Royal Belvedere Orchestra, one of the most important orchestral appointments in Germany. That he more than made good is shown by the fact that, three years later, he was selected successor to the Royal Music Director Trenkler, in this same orchestra, which is closely identified with the musical life of Dresden and is the one which was originally con- ducted by Robert Schumann and Richard Wagner. Since his selection as Kappelmeister, Olsen has taken his Orchestra on extensive concert tours in Germany with great success; and two years ago on a tournee through Scandinavia, which resulted in a great musical triumph for the Orchestra and its Director. The press in commenting on its work, praised particularly the extraordinarily pure, clear tone of the entire orchestra, the softness of the production, and the painstaking accuracy of its Director in bring- ing out the rythmic qualities. Mr. Olsen under the most trying and difficult conditions, always proves himself master of the occasion, and the Orchestra well merits the high reputation it sustains. Note: Mr. Olsen will conduct the Dresden Orchestra in Detroit.
