During our stay here, the king of the Papells sent a deputation to invite us to settle upon his territories; and the following .curious composition, as the translation of the king’s message, was given to us by one Birchall, who commanded the English slave sloop, and who on this occasion was our interpreter. “ The king of the Papells sent to me; he told me he was “ given to understand that you wanted to settle ; but the Por- “ tuguese would not allow you to settle here.
