May 21, Planted a pepper bush* which came the preceding night from Bissao, it put forth leaves the 30th, and was in full blossom the 10th of July, gathered ripe peppers from it on the 1st of September ; from which day, till the time we quitted the island (29th November,) it sup plied all the colonists, and would have done so for three months more. Planted some mint which I received with the above ; it throve much, and I left abundance of it on the island. 31, Sowed in tubs the following English seeds, which not only looked, but smelled very musty ; they were the remains of some which we brought from England, and of course must have been two, pro bably three, or more, years old.
