Began also taking up the roots of those trees, near the block-house, which had been felled in the rains. Therm, morning 63, noon 87. N. B. The N. E. breeze, which has so regularly blown for these last three weeks, generally begins about nine or ten at night, increases till about midnight, when it is pretty strong; retains its vigour till about ten the next morning ; from which time till noon it gradually dies away, and we have calms or light airs till it springs up again at nine in the evening. ^nd^ 3 ’ Same employment. Shot a guana, two feet seven inches in length, and roasted it; very delicate food. Therm, morning 65, noon 92. T 3rd Sd Same employment. This morning one of the grumetas drew his knife on me. Had I a pistol, I believe I should have shot him. This crime is common with them; they all carry knives in their girdles, and the instant they have any quarrel the knives are directly drawn. If this is not stopped, at least towards white men, I know not what may be the consequence. At noon I assembled all the grumetas, and endeavoured to convince them of the enormity of the crime which Domingo Swar had been guilty of, that his life was forfeited ; and that he now only lived through my clemency. They seemed astonished at his boldness, sorry for
