I might, it is true, have ordered the grumetas to do so, but the disgust shewn yes terday by two of them, in touching a corpse, prevented my imposing that duty on them, by which I might lose their affec tions. Note.—The thermometer, Farenheit’s, has hitherto been ex posed to the air, under the Hankey’s poop: in future it will be placed under a double canvas tent on shore, and, when not otherwise expressed, noted always at its greatest height between noon and 2 P. M. Same wind and weather. Employed as before, and planking Sunday, down the inside of the east store-room. Killed a bullock for the colonists. Mr. Rowe, who has not given me a sick list
