In Spain, it appears at the foot of the Pyrenees; and in Por tugal, at the mouth of the Tagus. It appears to be widely diftributed throughout Paleftine. Mount Arrarat in Armenia, and Mount Carmel, are compofed of amygdaloid. The Gar- row mountains in India, that reach to the Gulph of Perfia, are almoft entirely compofed of floetz- trap; and in the interior of the country, many rocks of the fame formation occur, and alfo in Tartary. According to the teftimony of late tra vellers, it occurs alfo abundantly in Africa, and the South Sea Iflands. It abounds alfo in North and South America. CHAP. IX. Class IV.—Alluvial Rocks. Thisclafs comprehends thofe rocky fubftances that are formed from previoufly-exifting rocks, of which the materials have been worn down by the agency of water and air, and afterwards depofited in nearly horizontal beds on the furface of the land, or on fea-coafts. * 2.‘ They occur partly in low and flat country, part ly in' high and mountainous country, and either in plains
