Moderately heated, it phofphorefces, emitting. a red light, and then falls into powder. It diffolves flowly, but enrirely, in nitrou$ acid, with cffervefceni e; and contains no fluor acid, as Mr. Klaproth evinced, by diflolving it in vinegar. It probably conrains mnre fixed air than the former variety, and probably a mixture of ftronthiap. 4-tli Family. See Leße, O. 1435. Striated or fibrous. Stalaciite, alabaitcr Unter. Its colours are grey; white, yellowifli or green- ifh wnite, or pale green, or light or cherry red, or reddifli brown, or bluifh grey, or ftrioed or veined with thefe colours. Its forms various, amorphous, or branched, jagged, tubulär, globular, &c. the furface fei- dom fmooth. Its luftre 1, but fometlmes abounds in fhinino- particles, often o. Its tranfparency 2. 1. ^ Its fraöure ftriated Gr fibrous, fometimes very fair.tly, the ftiias feldom parallel, ofrener diver- ging as from a common center, or ftarry; it f r e- quently difcovers diftindt ftratified concretions of different colours, fometimes parallel, oftcn curved or angularly undulating, or concentric. Its hardnefs from 5 to 7. Its fpec. grav. ac- cording to Eriffon, from 2,3259 to 2,876; this Jaft undopbtedly from an abundant mixture of metalüc
