44 RUBY FAMILY". Geographic Situation. It is found in the Carnatic, and on the coast of Mala* bar; also in China, and in the department of Serio in Italy. Use. It is used for cutting and polishing hard minerals ; and it is reported, although probably incorrectly, that the Chinese use it as an ingredient in their porcelain. Observations. This mineral was known to Dr Woodward as early as 1768. Dr Black ascertained that it differed from all other minerals then known.
