COMMON FLINTY SLATE. 189 Observations. 1 ■ As woodstone exhibits characters different from all other minerals, it is very properly arranged in the system a distinct substance. 2. We must be careful not to confound together all the varieties of petrified wood that occur in nature ; for Wood is sometimes petrified with hornstone, forming Woodstone ; sometimes with opal, forming Wood-opal; a t other times with quartz or calcareous earth. 4.
