AXINITE, OR THUMERSTONE. 107 2. The first crystal of axinite was described by Rome de Lisle, but he arranged it with schorl: it was Werner who first established it as a distinct species. 3. Werner named it Thumerstone, from Thum in Sax ony, where it was first found : Ilauy’s name Axinite, is derived from the shape of the crystals, which somewhat resembles that of an axe. 4. It differs considerably from the other species of the schorl family, and would seem to form a member of a di stinct family. V. GARNET FAMILY.
