5(30 URANIUM. It occurs massive and disseminated. Internally it is dull, but in some varieties it passes into glimmering and glistening. The fracture is small grained uneven, which sometimes passes into earthy, sometimes into small conchoidal. It is opaque. It is soft and very soft, sometimes passing into semi- hard. It is brittle. It soils very little. Specific gravity, 3.1500, La Metherie ; 3.2438, Hainj. Chemical Characters. According to Klaproth, the yellow varieties are pure oxide of uran, but the brownish and reddish contain also a little iron. Geogiioslic and Geographic Situations. It occurs along with the other ores of uranium. It is found at Joachimsthal, and Gottesgab in Bohe mia ; Johanngeorgenstadt in Saxony; and also in Trance. Observations. La Metherie, in his Lec^ons de Mineralogie, t. i. p.316. describes a mineral under the name Mine d'Urane Sili- cieusc, which has a browmish-black colour, conchoidal shining fracture, and is easily frangible. Itcontains, ac cording to Lampadius, Uranium, 32.; Silica, 56.; Iron, i.50, and Alumina, 3.50. It was found at Siebenlehn near Freyberg, imbedded in greenstone. OR OKU XXL
