It does not appear that tin has hitherto been niet with in any of our possessions in India. It is found °n the east coast of Sumatra, of Siam, and of Pegu ; but it is principally imported into our Indian Empire as an article of commerce from Queda, Junk-Ceylon, Tavai in Power Siam *, and the Island of Uanca. The tin mines of Uanca are said to be of great extent, and Mr Ellmore informs us, that there are exported from them annually Ho less than from forty to sixty thousand peculs of tin. It is said also to occur at a place five days journey from Nankin, in the province of Kianfu in China ■)•. America.—Tin-stone is found in Mexico, where it is extracted from alluvial deposites by means of washing, in the intendancy of Guanuaxuata and Zacatecas. It is said also to occur in Chili. Uses. It is worked as an ore of tin, and nearly all the tin of commerce is obtained from it. Observations. 1. It is distinguished from wolfram, by its superior hard* n Css, as it gives sparks with steel, whereas wolfram yields readily to the knife; and also by the streak, which is of a greyish-white colour, whereas that of wolfram is red dish brown.
