242 IRON. Geographic Situation. Europe. It occurs in veins in primitive rocks neat Dunkeld, and in Benmore in Perthshire; also in Fitful- head, and other places in Mainland, the largest of the Zetland Islands. In England, it is met with at Tavi stock in Devonshire; Eskdale in Cumberland ; near Bris tol ; and in Caernarvonshire. The iron-mines in Nor way and Sweden, afford small quantities of this ore; and it is also met with in the iron-mines of Olnetz in Russia, and in those in Saxony, Bohemia, Lusatia, Silesia, Fran conia, Suabia, Bavaria, France, Island of Elba, and Hun gary. Asia. In the mines of Catharinenburg 'in Siberia. America.—Chili. Uses. It melts better than common iron-glance, but requires a greater addition of limestone. The iron which it af fords is sometimes cold-short, but is well fitted for cast- ware. Observations. 1. It passes into Red Scaly Iron-ore. 2. It affords from 70 to 80 per cent, of iron. 3. Iron-glance cccurs usually with quartz; whereas magnetic ironstone is frequently accompanied with lime stone. 4. It is the Eisenmann of older mineralogists. 8. Red
