. — 330 — The portrait of Mr. Millais is lais superb painting of himself, very satisfiictorily etched by Waltner. The specimens fo this artist’s pre Raphaelite period are sparingly given, but are of rather a novel nature. The strange and awkward Ophelia is by no means well known, and the wonderful drawing called “ A Ruined Devotee of the Turf” is scarcely known at ail. This is perhaps the most curious example of the principles of the brotherhood as applied to modem life, which now exists “ Forbidden Fruit ” is, by no means the most beautiful of Mr. Millais’s late studies of children, but it is well etched; and the “ North-West-Passage ” of 1874 seems almost more satisfactory in black and white than in colour Mr. Herkomer, perhaps, appears to less advantage than the others, because it is his whim to insist on being his own etcher and engraver. He is, indeed, very successful in these capacities, and has, in mezzo-tint espe- cially, a wonderful touch for an am ateur Among the many tributes to contemporary art one of the most splendid is the publication entitled “Modem Artists”.
