The female hen harrier weighs eighteen ounces, is twenty inches in length, and three feet in the expanfion of the wings. The bill is of a dark horn co lour : cere, and eyes, yellow: on each fide the head, under the eyes, is a femi- circular rim of ftiff feathers, very pale: the back and wings are of a dull brown: belly and under parts paler, marked with oblong dafhes of dark brown edged with white: the rump is white: the tail pretty long, barred with dull brown, and tipped with white. Thefe birds are extremely deftruftive to young poultry, and to the feathered game. They fly near the ground, Ikimming the furface in fearch of prey, and rarely fettle on trees; but on a fine day will foar to a great height in the air. They make their nefts on the ground, and lay in general three eggs, for which fee PI. IV. Fig. 2.
