The bill is three inches long, nearly black, remarkably broad at the end, and ferrated on the edges: eyes, yellow : head, and part of the neck, glofly pale blue: bread, and back, white, with fhell-like markings of black on the back: Ihoulder of the wing, lefs wing coverts, and part of the greater, blue: upper feathers of the greater wing coverts, brown, tipped with white, fo as to form a white band on the wing: quill feathers, black; fome of the middle ones edged with green: belly, chocolate colour: thighs, black: vent, white, mottled with black: tail, black, and pointed, with blue edges to the outer feathers: legs, dull orange. The upper and under parts of the female are brown, with a flight tint of blue on the wing coverts. This bird vifits us in autumn. It feeds on Ihrimps, and other inlefts, for taking and retaining which the beak is particularly adapted. It is faid to breed in France, and to lay ten or twelve reddilh-coloured eggs.
