In this bird the top of the head is a very dark brown: round the bafe of the upper mandible, white, almoft to the eye, which is yellow: fore part of the neck, and breaft, chefnut brown, mottled with black: back, dull brown, mottled with grey, and fpeckled with black: belly, and vent, white: quills, dull black : part of the lefs wing coverts, white: legs, dark lead colour. The female does not attain the white at the bafe of the bill till the fecond year. The young of this fpecies may be diftinguifhed from the reft of the genus by the very ftiort round tail, and the end of the bill, which is broad. Thefe birds vifit us in fmall flights in the autumn, and in fevere winters are •numerous on our fea-coafts. They feed on fhell-fifh, and live conftantly on the fait water: though, when the wind blows very hard, they are driven inland, and may be met with on frefh waters. They breed in Iceland, Lapland, and America.
