This bird weighs near feven pounds. The bill is very thick at the bafe, and of a pale orange colour j the nail at the tip is white: the forehead, and round the bafe of the bill, white: head, and neck, a pale dun: back, and wings, grey; greater wing coverts, edged with white: quills, black: bread and belly, white, with black curved markings : rump, and vent, white: legs, orange: webs, dulky. It breeds in the northern parts of Europe and America, and vifits us in the winter in fmall flights only, confining itfelf to the fens and marlhes. Linnteus has erroneoufly confidered this fpecies as the female of our berna- cle goofe.
