This fpecies is nearly the fize of the preceding, being in weight feven pounds. The bill is long for birds of this genus, and (lender at the end, of a dull orange colour in the middle, with the bafe and nail black. The head, neck, and back, are greyifh brown: the under parts, dull white : wing coverts, grey brown, with white tips and edges to the feathers: quills, dull black: rump, white : tail, blackilh: legs, dull orange. The name of bean goofe is given to this bird from the refemblance of the nail at the end of the beak to a horfe-bean. It is a regular vifitor to us in winter, and returns to the northern parts of Scotland and the Continent late in the fpring to breed. It likewife inhabits the north of America.
