12 XIAND-BOOK OP WASHINGTON. THE STREET DIRECTORY. Tub street plan of the city of Washington is symmetrically arranged for the convenience of facilitating distant points. There arc 1170 blocks or squares, bounded by 22 avenues, rang ing from 130 to 160 feet in width, named, as far as they go, after the different Slates; and 100 streets, from 70 to 100 feet in width, running north and south, and crossed at light angles by streets running east and west, except where the avenues intersect, forming a considerable rect angular or circular open space, which, when the city is built up, will give it an open appearance. The Capitol is the division of therstreets, which are alphabetically and numerically named. The streets running east and west arc designated by letters, having the words north or south affixed to them, according as they arc situated north or south of the Capitol, as A street north, A street south, which is the first street north or south of the Capitol.
