From the cir cumstance of his having been obliged to direct the whole of his attention to self-preservation, and to procuring food for subsistence, his memory lias almost altogether failed him as to time and events which occurred previous to his leaving England. He forgets the name of the vessel he came in, as well as that of the Captain, and the Commandant of the Settlement. From his information, the natives are in the lowest grade of ignorance, having no idea of a Supreme Being; and although I have had but a short intercourse with them, I am inclined to give credence to his statement, and I have acquired sufficient confidence in them to trust myself amongst them in excursions into the interior.
