Wir können also anneh men, daß auch dieser Originalroman in 10,000 Exemplaren in Deutschland allein verbreitet ist. In Amerika ist er vielfach nachge druckt worden. Dessen Ro man „Lichten st ein" erschien zuerst (bei Brodhag in St.) in zwei Auflagen, die uns zu 3 und 4000 Exempl., zusammen also auf 7000 Exempl. angegeben werden. Diesen beiden Auflagen folgten, ^ wie wir aus bester Quelle schöpfen, im Jahre 1840—41 eine dritte ! Auflage von 10,000, 1846 eine vierte Auflage von abermals 10,000 Exempl. und 1853 die fünfte (sogenannte Elassikcr-) Auflage von 15,000 Exempl., in demselben Jahre eine sechste Auflage mit Stahlstichen von 2000 und 1856—57 eine siebente Stereoryp-Aus- lage von 5000 Exempl., der in diesem Jahre, da der Vorrath zu Ende geht, eine achte Auflage folgen muß. Der Gesammtabsatz in Deutschland — der amerikanische Nachdruck nicht zu rechnen — darf also auf 50.000 Exempl. geschätzt werden, ein Resultat, dessen sich in Deutschland kein zweiter R o m a n schriftstellcr rühmen kann. Das Glück eines unserer Dichter ist auch das Glück der Nation, der er angehört, auf die sein Ruhm zurückfällt. Der Londoner Unlcrstützungsvcrein für hilfsbedürf tige Buchhändler (llooksellsrs' Lrovillent Intuition) besteht gegen wärtig aus 518 Mitgliedern, die einen Jahresbeitrag von 2 Gui neen zahlen, und hat im verwichcnen Jahre 949 Pf., gegen 883 Pf. in dem vorhergehenden, an Unterstützungsbedürftige ausgegcben. Das Vereinsvcrmögen beläuft sich jetzt auf 22,412 Pf., 51 Pf. weniger als die letzte Rechnungsablagc nachgewiescn hat. Von den bisjctzt unterstützten Personen haben zwei 420 Pf. empfangen, eine 346 Pf., sechs 230 Pf. und bei fünfzehn varürcn die Summen zwischen 100 und 200 Pfd. Eharlcs Dickens wird mir dem 1. Mai eine neue perio dische Schrift unter dem Titel „5Il ronnll >I,e Ve«r" erscheinen lassen, wogegen die „Ilousvkolll IVorlls" Ende des gleichen Monats aufkören sollen. — Der berühmte Verfasser von „ Eothcn ", King - lake, ist eifrig mit einer Geschichte des Krimkriegcs beschäftigt.
