HE Joint Stock Company known as Vereinigte Maschinenfabrik Augsburg und Maschinenbaugesellschaft Nürnberg, A.-G. and having its headquarters at Augsburg was formed in November 1898 by the amalgamation of the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg and the Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Nürnberg. The Maschinenfabrik Augsburg was founded in 1840 by L. Sander and in the year 1844 passed into the hands of Messrs. C. Reichenbach and C. Buz with a staff of 44 workmen; the formation of the Company took place in 1857 with Fl. 600 000 share capital and a staff of 333 workmen. At the present day the Augsburg works employ some 3200 officials and workmen, with salaries and wages amounting to nearly 4 000 000 Marks. The yearly turnover amounts to nearly 10 000 000 Marks. The ground covered by the works is 14,3 hectares of which 43°/o is built upon. To supply power for the works there are 8 steam engines of a total maximum horse power of 1900, one turbine of 40 H. P. and 5 Diesel motors of a total of 200 H. P.; of this power supply 800 H. P. are taken by the electrical plant which supplies current to 500 arclamps, 2000 glowlamps and 90 electroinotors. The workshops for engineering work are fitted with 600 vices and 1000 machine tools, and there are 5 kilometres of railway lines within the works. The Augsburg works manufacture more especially steam engines (of which 2540 have been turned out up to the present time), steam boilers (885), turbines (532), Diesel motors (18), refrigerating machines (1630), pumping machinery for water supply plants &c., shafting and book printing presses (6180, 364 of which are rotary presses). With regard to benevolent institutions there are amongst others a Workman’s sick fund, a Workman’s aid fund and a Workman’s provident fund with a total capital of nearly 895 000 Marks. The officials share in the subsequently mentioned Pension fund. There are 124 dwellings for workman’s fainilies in 18 buildings. The Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Nürnberg was founded in 1842 by J. F. Klett and after his death in 1847 passed on to his son in law Th. Cramei-Klett; at this time 300 workmen were etnployed. In 1873 the business was turned into two joint' stock Companies, the Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Nürnberg with a capital of 2 700 000 Marks and the Süddeutsche Brückenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft of Munich with a capital of 600 000 Mks., which latter however was amalgamated in the year 1884 again with the first named Company. The business in Nürnberg began with the establishment and working of an iron foundry and engineering works, but about the year 1850 was greatly increased by the commencement of the manufacture of railway plant and rolling stock such as waggons, turn tables, water cranes and further of bridges, testing machines, steam-engines, pumping machinery &c. ln 1858 2600 workmen Fire tube boiler. were employed.
